Fat Fact # 2: It Fights Inflammation

Another BIG reason to embrace fats! Fats are a cornerstone when it comes to our bodies ability to shut off inflammation. It's normal for some inflammation to occur but, over-inflammation is at the root of most chronic illnesses.

From arthritis to atherosclerosis, or leaky gut to autoimmune disease, you can bet inflammation was present first.

Healthy Fats, particularly Omegas 3 & 6, are a key ingredient in prostaglandin formation. Prostaglandin's are a hormone like substance that communicate the need for inflammation and also tell the body when to turn it off -- and it's those Essential Fatty Acids that make the ones needed for turning it off!  So, if we don't supply the building blocks (the Essential Fatty Acids), our bodies can't build the prostaglandins!

I mentioned in my previous post "Fat Fact #1" that removing fat from my diet led to the issues I'm overcoming today. Part of those issues was the inflammation that was driving my body toward autoimmunity. And it's important to note that inflammation is also connected to a growing number of illnesses we see running rampant today: heart disease, cancer, diabetes, obesity, allergies, arthritis and even autism and depression. Every one of these illnesses is, essentially, the symptom that inflammation has persisted in the body for far too long.

Dr. Mark Hyman has a great quote "If you want to cool off inflammation in the body, you must find the source. Treat the fire, not the smoke".

A great start at putting out that fire -- and preventing it from spreading -- is making sure you have a healthy balance of fats in your diet. Avocados, Olives, Coconut (oil, fruit, milk and butter), wild caught fish, grass-fed meats, raw nuts... and raw butter! Yes, butter...provided you can tolerate dairy and aren't on a protocol that calls for it's elimination. Not the little square kind at the local grocery store, but farm-fresh and non processed. And for Heaven's sake... stay away from margerine. I've said it before and I'll repeat it here, kick the processed, refined foods out of your life! Eat your "medicine" in it's whole-food, unrefined form to move toward your best health possible.
